Eugene gave us a quite a comprehensive summary of many intricate things that an CEO can do !!! During 9/11 disaster, he was a part of a team of business recovery consultants at GE Aviation after the business saw an unprecedented blow. The Aircraft Engines services and Parts business in MRO completely stopped. So no revenue. The Invoices could not be paid so no receivable-no cash. The current WIP became a risk instead of an asset as it would need more cash to complete. At the time like this, we sat down with a clean sheet of paper as a small but a determined team and decided to do what Eugene was talking about.
Every Saturday, we booked and tracked executed cost ideas that were promised by each employee. It can be as little as $500 or as big as $ 50,000 idea. We totaled over $6M of operating cost saving that came very handy. We kept striving for better ways of survival and decided to re-engineer this company by designing the entire operation in a new LEAN flow. After 3 months of continuous work, and shutting down 7 out of 10 buildings, we had created a LEAN company that had 40% less OCPH (Over Head Cost Per Hour) and became very competitive in the market with 20% reduction in TAT (Turn Around Time) for Engine Overhaul business.
I have become a firm believer that the crisis like this produces the kind of extraordinary performances, that can only be done by striving for the success in an intense way.
I admire what Eugene has done for us to keep striving with enthusiasm and hope and do the best at the time of need. Is that not what great consultants do?
